Chicago Area Adventure Racing Association is a leading Co-sponsor of the 12th Annual IATOS 2002 Expo and World Congress on Adventure & Eco Tourism.

Visit the Adventure Racing Conference, where CAARA is a participant on the panel "Grass Roots Races: Small, Traditional and Shorter Duration", by clicking on "Adventure Racing".  This show will be at Navy Pier February 23 and 24. We will also have a booth at the Adventure Racing Pavilion and will need help staffing the booth. Please let us know if you would be interested in helping the club.

Orienteering and Mountain Biking at Waterfall Glen, Darien, IL.

We had a great turnout with over 20 members braving the 25 degree temps for the first event of the year.  Thanks to all who attended for making the event a big success!

bulletLearn to read a topographic map and identify terrain features using symbols, legends, contour lines, scales, etc.
bulletLearn to land navigate using dead reckoning and terrain association techniques
bulletLearn to use the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid system and plot coordinates
bulletPractice these skills now rather than wait until race day

   Time: 10 am to 4 pm

   Cost: $10 CAARA members, $15 non-members

   Location: Seymour Simon Forest Preserve, Schiller Park.
    Lawrence & Des Plaines River Road.

bulletMay 11 - Adventure Racing 101 Clinic

Join us for a full-day adventure racing course. Designed with the beginning racer in mind, we'll spend the day learning basic land navigation, mountain biking tips, canoe/kayak skills, rope technique, race strategies, gear selection, nutrition, training, and more.  This day will prove to be a great time to learn what to expect as you gear up for your first race.

Location: Skokie Lagoons

Cost: $50 members/$60 non-members.  

Cost includes: A full-day of skill building and as an added bonus, each participant will receive a copy of Don Mann and Kara Schaad's must-have book, The Complete Guide to Adventure Racing.

bulletMay 26 - Sea Kayaking Workshop

Come out and learn the basics of sea kayaking on this full-day
training. Topics covered will include basic strokes, rescues, training, and equipment.  The afternoon is set aside for paddling along the lakefront.  Bring a lunch.

10 am to 4 pm

Location: Gillson Park, Wilmette, IL (alternate location in case of high wind or waves is the Skokie Lagoons, Winnetka, IL)

Cost:  Only $35 for CAARA members, $45 for non-members

Cost includes:  Instruction by BCU certified instructor,
single sea kayak, all equipment, and permits.
